Updated: Aug 4, 2021

Many of our disability support workers at Nextt attest to how rewarding their career is. Although there is a degree of challenge, the role also affords the wonderful ability to make a difference to the lives of people who need it.

Since the inception of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), support workers have enjoyed greater choice in work, with more available roles and increased opportunities for long-term advancement.

Why might being a support worker be a great choice for me?

Above everything else, a disability support worker can know that their actions are making a positive impact onto individuals and the community. Each day as a support worker is different, and because you are working with people, you will be continually building fulfilling relationships.

For people who are easily motivated by the desire to build connections and help others, disability support is a natural job pathway.

The role also affords flexible hours and excellent work-life balance, as support workers can arrange their hours based on their own schedule. With plenty of job opportunities, as well as over 70,000 new jobs expected to open thanks to the NDIS support scheme, you will have the luxury of choice to find a specific role which suits you best.

What tasks does the job involve?

The assistance you will provide as a support worker will depend on the health of the person you are assigned to work with.

Overall, the role will be to offer personal, physical and emotional support.

Average tasks in this position tends to comprise of: creating support programs for clients to help them live independently, organising and attending social gatherings, assisting with household tasks, accompanying the client on daily activities, helping clients maintain contact with family and friends, and helping individuals with disability live independently with regards to personal care, hygiene and health.

What qualifications are required?

The most important qualifier for a disability support worker is the passion to help others, even above formal qualifications. Strong communication skills and a willingness to learn are important for this role, as each client will have their individual challenges and needs. A Certificate III and IV in Disability Work can improve employment opportunities and opens doors for team leader roles with agencies such as Nextt.
